Shopping
Shopping in Kenya can be a lot of fun and a large pain at the same time. The first thing to realize is that bargaining is a must. Almost anywhere you go to buy something you will be able and expected to bargain. Shop for local handicrafts and art, including wood carvings of animals and people, sisal baskets, Masai and Kikuyu beadwork, handwoven kanga (sarong) fabric, Kisii soapstone, intricately carved gourds, ebony carvings, batik wall hangings, antiques (notably Arabic pieces), blue tanzanite or green tsavorite gemstones, and malachite.

IMAGE Artefacts

ImageLovers of ethnic artifacts and objects will find plenty of traditional and tribal items in Kenya. Spears are particularly sought after and come apart into several sections making them easy to transport. Like the painted leather shields, most are mass-produced for the tourist market. Turkana wrist knives forged from car shock absorbers are also high kudos souvenirs.

Decorated Massai Calabashes, traditionally used to store food, are eye-catching but tend to pong a bit. All sorts of masks are available, although few are used in rituals today. The Northern tribes including the Turkana, Gabbra, Rendille, Oromo and Samburu are all good sources of artifacts.Popular items include Gourds, Neck Pillows (small carved stools propped under the neck while sleeping), Shields, Gourds, Spears, Wrist knives and Traditional swords called Simis.
